I promise I will stop being depressing.

Iris feels like it’s time to start looking at certain things from a new perspective. It feels like time to start thinking about certain situations in a different way. This past Tuesday night when I had a long talk with someone about our relationship, It made me realize how much a person can learn about themselves and about past situations even thou a lot of time has passed. It made me see how much people can grow up so fast and yet learn so much.  I have learned that sometimes acceptance takes time to appear its ugly head.  There are things in life we have to accept but have a hard time accepting for one reason or another. For me it was accepting the fact that love had faded and that everything was changing.  I had to see that thou I didn’t want things to happen the way they happened, that I  wasn’t grown up enough to control it or stop it from turning out bad.  I think there is hope that my past situation will turn out to be good again someday even if it’s not in the form id like it to be in, acceptance is the key. There are other words I’d like to say but I can’t find the words right now, and as I read this the more semi-depressing it sounds.  So I might as well stop now before Sam comes after me for being so depressing and not writing about random stuff like I should be. I just feel like I need a space to vent.

Finals Bliss

Ah yes, Finals week of the summer term.  Always a brightening thought.  Not.  So Samantha choses to be a rebel and write this instead of her fascinating paper on Islam.  :D  Procrastination, how I heart thee.
While I will be glad to have this class behind me, finals week is an unfortunate reminder that I am to return to the main land in a few short weeks, while lovely Iris stays here.  Once again the daring, devilish, darling duo will be separated for an interminable term.  However, once the split occurs, the stories should gain some new insight and adventure.  Not to mention the days will start to slip by faster and faster as Fantasy Fest comes upon us.
I will keep this brief, for the explanation of mosques and Mohammad have been put off until the last minute, as usual, but I just thought I would drop by and say "Hello" to all of our lovely readers.
Ciao

Bonnie, Bonnie Weather

Today, our lovely island of Key West is to be assaulted by Tropical Storm Bonnie.  Although, from past experience, Bonnie's "assault" will feel more like a caress.  A little rain, some wind, just enough thunder to let you know she's out there. . .Personally it sounds like bliss.  What is more relaxing than the sound of a light thunderstorm?  The rain on the metal roof? Perfection.  Makes me want to curl up in bed with my horribly tattered copy of "The Secret Garden" or "Alice in Wonderland."  (Obviously my taste in books reflects my taste in movies, as mentioned in earlier posts.)
So with Bonnie nearly upon us, I break out the books, my favorite fleece blanket, and a little Chris Botti.  If you haven't heard Chris Botti, I suggest you start.  "She Comes from Somewhere", "My Funny Valentine", "Cinema Paradiso", and "Con Te Partio (Time to Say Goodbye)" are a few of my favorites.  While it wasn't our intention when Iris and I started this blog, I have realized that we often list ways for you to do things like destressing, etc.  So here is Sam's Ultimate-Rainy-Day Soundtrack

Bennie and the Jets-Elton John
All Around Me-Flyleaf
Iris-The Goo-Goo Dolls
Sunday Morning-Maroon 5
Unlike Me (A'capella Version)-Kate Havnevik
They-Jem
Only Time-Enya
Let Go-Frou Frou
Better Together-Jack Johnson
Ocean Size Love-Leigh Nash
Buried in Blue-Harry Connick Jr.
Someone to Watch Over Me-Amy Winehouse (Before she was a total druggie)
Cinema Paradiso-Chris Botti
My Funny Valentine-Chris Botti
Time to Say Goodbye-Chris Botti
I Want You (She's So Heavy)-The Beatles
Jamming-Bob Marley
Amber-311
Love Song-311

Mix and match depending on your mood. :)

Well, I'm off to brave the storm while washing the car.

Journey to Mars

Why is it that when it comes to single life, men get the coolest places, parties, etc.?
There's posters of Marilyn Monroe on the walls, they watch hardcore action or western films while sippin' beers on a beat up leather couch while we get gauzy drapes and matching furniture.  Why is it that women don't have awesome, hard core bachelorette pads?  We don't even get to have the word "bachelorette" in SpellCheck!!  Right this minute Google Chrome is trying to turn "bachelorette" into "bachelorhood" or "baccalaureate".  It is unfair I tell you!
I think we should embrace our singledom instead of wallowing in the depression of our lack of proposals or dinner dates.  Stop painting our walls in pastels!  Get rid of the puppy calendars!  Keep our Twilight books out of sight!  Let's talk cars and wine and motorcycles and guns!  Why do men get to have the outrageous parties that end in late night swims wearing only our underwear? I think we should grab the bull by the horns and start being badass!
I realize, of course, that some of the women out there like pastel walls and puppy calendars, but what guy is going to want to go into the room?  If we are totally honest with ourselves, we'll understand that when men see our rooms, we're showing them ourselves, and how we plan to live our lives.  What guy, no, what bachelor wants pastel walls and puppy calendars?  If we make ourselves more like the men we're trying to date, then won't they be more comfortable with us, ergo leading to a relationship lasting longer than a movie date and a grope on the couch?  Honestly ladies.  There is a time and place for pastel walls and puppy calendars: on tropical islands and your daughter's room, respectively.
Now I'm not saying that we need to start putting up Harley posters and watching Scarface and Cool Hand Luke (although I do suggest both) but we need to make a step towards building the bridge between the sexes.  They deal with our problems and our insecurities and, the woe of all men, our tears, so I think we can make an effort to help their struggle to connect with us.
So I say we break out The Godfather and Animal House, fire up the grill, buy a Guns and Ammo, and down some Jack Daniels.  It is time to try living on Mars.

Mindless Drivel at Its Worst

Ah, the life of an islander.  Our fair city has another Ernest Hemingway look-a-like winner, the weather is hot hot hot, and the time for school starts to hurtle towards us.  With just over a month left until school begins again, Iris and Samantha begin to start doing all things fun before the tidal wave of essays and studying sweep away all of our free time.  *Sigh*  Iris is spending her time enjoying the rest and relaxation that summer vacation brings, while Samantha spends her time cleaning for the ridiculous amount of guests she is to expect in the coming weeks.  Personally, I envy Iris.  Lucky Duck.  Ah, well, nothing can be done for that.  All I can do is look forward to seeing Toy Story with the madre and Iris.  Iris and I have always been avid kid movie fans, and this summer has provided us with a plethora of new movies to enjoy.
Just recently, she and I went to see the wonderful, fantabulous, hilarious "Despicable Me" which may be one of my new all-time favorite children movies.  The characters are great, the effects are great, and Iris and I were laughing so hard, I nearly sprayed the toddler in front of me with Coca-Cola through the nose. Nearly.  In between the "IT'S SO FLUFFY"ness and the toilet-brush unicorn, Iris and I had enough material for about 80 inside jokes that left the parental units with a vast amount of questions about our sanity.
If you have not seen "Despicable Me", both of us highly recommend it, whether you are 4, 40, or 94.  Tis a fabulous bit of comedy, and well worth the exorbitant prices they charge us nowadays to see films in the theatre.
Well, yet again I have put off my assignment until the night before class, so I must go write for the professor, instead of regaling you, our small following, with tales of scary man-voiced women and turning Sense & Sensibility into something senseless.  Until next time, dear readers.
Ciao.

OH THE PAIN!!!!!!!!!!

Well Samantha will be out of touch during the next few days because her mighty teeth of wisdom are being removed. :( I'm sure Iris will keep all of you entertained. Meanwhile I'll be sitting on the couch eating nothing but icecream and mashed potatoes and watching reruns of Friends and True Blood. If I do happen to get onto Blogger, I apologize in advance for the mindless drivel that will pour forth from my keyboard. I will blame painkillers entirely. So until I returned to my happy computer chair and lose the gauze in the cheek, I wish you all adieu.

Iris has feelings.

Sam knows what I went through our Junior year of high school and knows how much it has effected me. But one thing I don't think she knows is that ever since then I have felt like something is missing and that I've tried to replace what I feel is missing and have not been successful at it. I feel like I need some closure with the person that my experience happened with but can't seem to tell if thats how i really feel or if its just an easy solution to try to get that someone to see if they still feel something. If closure is what I really do need, I'm not sure how to achieve that. Someone told me that I should talk to the person about it but I kinda don't think thats an opion. I know I said that I'm not sure if closure is what I really need but now that I think about maybe thats why I feel like something is missing. Maybe thats why I can't be civil around this person. Maybe I really do need closure from this whole mess. I feel like in my gut that me and this person still have some unfinished business to work out. I feel like the whole situatio ended badly and since it ended that way it didnt give us a chance to really talk it out face to face. I feel like all it brought us was awkwardness and sadness. Now the big question is am I just crazy for thinking all of this or is it something that is appaernt to everyone and is something we both really need?

Friends for So Long

After reading Iris's moment, Sam had a moment as well.
Often times people describe best friends as people who with each other through thick and thin, people who trust every thing to each other, etc.  Then there is the lighter moments where your best friend walks into your house without knocking, calls your parents Mom and Dad, and instead of bailing you out of jail, they're sitting on the bench next to you going, "Well that was fun." The third type is a combination of the two: a friend you have known since before you can remember, who has seen you at your best and worst, and is so in tune with how your mind works that they might as well have ESP.
I bring this up because my mood has been rather melancholy recently (a fact I blame on this dreary weather Key West has been experiencing) and Iris has voiced my opinions almost perfectly.  Battling the world is difficult, tiresome, and adds premature wrinkle lines, much to my distaste.  Over the years, both Iris and I have had our share of bad-egg boyfriends, unrequited loves, and embarrassing/drama-filled moments that require large amounts of ice-cream and chick flicks to cure.  Both Iris and Sam have perfected this method of cleansing, and feel that keeping this foolproof recipe for removing the blues is unfair to the rest of our fair species.

Iris and Samantha's Ultimate-Wash-That-Man-Right-Outta-Your-Hair-And-Ditch-That-Drama Night

Lots of pillows, comfy pajamas, and a couch or comfortable rug is required for ultimate comfort.
Facial masks or foot spas for those of us who enjoy those sorts of frilly things.
Chinese Food
Your two new boyfriends-Ben & Jerry (We suggest multiple flavors)
And of course, the movies:
Bridget Jones
Love Actually
The Holiday
Under the Tuscan Sun
10 Things I Hate About You
And pretty much any thing else that involves attractive guys and love. :D

Ritualistic burning of the possessions and pictures of the person who has caused you pain can be helpful, but we suggest doing this outside with a bucket of water near by.  And avoid burning anything plastic.  Molten plastic smells worse than dead fish and also has the minor side effect of being toxic.

Another easy cure, of course, is to get dressed to the nines in something that makes you look fabulous, then flaunt what yo mama gave you at the local club.  A boosted ego makes for a boosted happy factor.  Iris and Samantha can both verify that for ya.

So get out there and have a fantabulous day, and fight off those drama debacles with the cunning use of female empowering movies and the two men who will always be faithful: Benjamin and Jerry.

Having a moment

Right now Iris is having a moment. I am having one of those feelings I often get when I start to think too much. Sometimes these moments I have can make me sad and make me think of things that I thought I had forgotten. I think the solution to this is to try to be happy with the way things are at the moment. Sometimes that is really hard to do when everyone else around you is as happy as can be. It's hard to be happy for them and it's hard when you think that your happiness will never come. I try to be positive but since I've hated the world for sooooooo long, it's getting pretty hard to stay positive all the time. Negativity comes out in me more often than I'd like but I guess its something to work on. Right now I'm just thinking about someone, and some stuff, and it's just really bringing me down. And the fact that most of my songs on my itunes are sad doesnt really help much.

What is love? Baby don't hurt me.

No one can say for sure who there one true love is. No one can know if there is more than one for them. Maybe that’s why most people have affairs and end marriages because they meet someone else that they also think could be the one. And even if someone did find that one true love how could you really say for sure that you would want to spend the rest of your life with them? Is there some kind of test you could take to tell? Or if you feel it how do you know what the feeling feels like? But if you did truly love your beloved would you risk anything for them? Would they risk anything for you? How far would you go to keep your beloved? Would it be worth it to protect them? How do you make the choice?
I don’t think anyone can really know what love is even if they are in “love.” Everyone has their own definition of the word, of the feeling it brings, how it feels, etc. there really isn’t one true definition. Its like a word that just doesn’t have any one true meaning. Everyone also has different opinions on how far he or she would go for their beloved. There is also a limit on how long someone is willing to wait for their beloved. Some may wait months, years, days, decades, and some might just give up if it doesn’t come right away. There is a saying that says love is patient and kind, but is it really patient? Is it really kind? Probably sometimes but not all the time. If love was patient with all people then some of us would be willing to wait forever for our one true love. If love was kind there would be no broken hearts. There would be no divorce and affairs. There would just be a world full of loving kind people that know no boundaries when it comes to their beloved.
Some also think that there is someone for everyone. But is there really? Are we all truly destined to find that one special person or in some cases many special people? Some people never seem to find their destined one and just go through their lives with multiple dates and a bunch of cats to talk to. If there really was someone for everyone would single people exist? Maybe no one would ever be alone. If there really was someone for everyone the concept of dating might not exist. And even when some people do think they finally did find the one that person ends up slipping through their fingers. Then he or she ends up watching sad movies crying all alone stuffing their face with junk food, just to end up fat and unhappy. Than wishing they never done that and start to think they were destined to be that way and never to find some else.
Then there’s the most hated kind of love of all. The kind of love that really shouldn’t be called love at all, and frankly I don’t even know what to call it. It’s the kind of of “love” where you find someone that seems to completely charming and nice and then turns out to be a back stabbing jerk, and yet you keep on loving this person and getting back with them for reasons that are unknown to you at the time. The reasons do not become clear to you until you have grown and up. When you grow up you realize that you kept loving this person for the following reasons: you think no one but them will ever love you. You haven’t been loved by anyone outside your family and friends for a very very long time. You have just gotten out of a relationship and need love. Its rebound time. You just wanted a fling. There was something about them you couldn’t resist. You have convinced yourself you really do love them and need to be with them. You think you can change them. Etc. this is the worst kind of “love” you can ever be in. the worst part is that you’re hurting yourself and you know it, but just can’t fix it right away. In Love Actually in the beginning Huge Grant says in his little speech that love really is all around. I agree it is and it’s in all different forms even if it’s the kind that sucks out your soul. Even if its with the biggest jerk in the world love is all around.
Some don’t think that jerks aka the male species that women are forced to live with (unless you’re into girls) are made to love. But I kind of think they are made to love. Everyone is made to love. It just takes a special person to love each of us. It’s just a process to find the person that is willing to put up with us. If only love came with directions like a map or book to tell us who to avoid and who is ment for us then maybe things would be easy, or would they be boring? I don’t think anyone really knows for sure.
Love is complicated. Being in love is almost like being bipolar or having constant mood swings. First your all happy and can’t stop smiling then the next thing you know you’re sitting on the couch with pizza watching movies like Bridget Jones Diary (one and two) and the notebook. Your favorite book soon becomes he’s just not that into you and dating for dummies. Seeing your friends and other people be all happy and kissy face with their beloved makes you sick and depressed causing you to eat more and more. But then after that phase passes you watch the holiday and Kate Winslet soon becomes your hero and the word Gumption appears on your facebook status.
So I guess the point is that love is an undefined word and feeling. It makes us all crazy and happy. It hurts us, brakes us, and makes us gain weight. But at the end of the day we realize that the two things that make everyone crazy start with L. Life and Love. The two words that just don’t seem to have a one true meaning.

Beat Back the College Blues

Having both completed their first year, Iris and Samantha have discovered what truly beats back those I'm-gonna-fail-college blues.  There is always the food frenzy route which involves Chinese left overs, pizza, ice cream, giant gummy bears, skittles, charleston chews, red vines, oreos, and the questionable left-overs in the swan shaped aluminium foil.  However, if you don't want to resemble a mix between Ms. Cleo and a hippo, I would not suggest this particular route.  (Unless you are one of those people who never gains an ounce, in which case we despise you and suggest that you stop reading our blog as it will never apply to your life.)

What we do suggest is the "Return to Childhood" route, or the "Go back to Another Era Where Life Didn't Suck" route.

Instructions on Returning to Childhood-land-thing.

Go find a VCR.  And some VHS.  (If you don't know what those are, get out.  Now.)
VHS titles we suggest: Cinderella, Little Mermaid, Lion King, Thumbelina, Rugrats Movie, Good Burger Movie, etc.
In front of the television, you will need a number of chairs, tables, etc.  And some really ginormous blankets.
Build blanketfort.
Stock said blanketfort with the tools needed: coloring books, 64 pack of crayons (with the sharpener in the back), Lunchables, Juicie-Juice Box, Fruit by the Foot/Gushers/Fruit Roll-ups, etc.
Proceed to watch movies, color, and eat the food we used to think tasted good.

Go Back to Another Era:
(Note: traveling back in eras may cause rash, shrunken limbs, or thumb sucking.  This process is not FDA approved.  May also cause horrendous fashion calls and temper tantrums.  --Iris)
This one is a little more difficult since we don't know how far back you want to go.  Do you want to go to the 80s and dig the leg warmers and neon colors?  Do you want to party it up with Audrey Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, or Marlon Brando before he started offering non-refusable offers? Perhaps finding rich husbands/wives with dowries and attending balls is more your style? Well here are a few for each of those tastes.

80's-Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club, Flashdance, etc.  Bring your scrunchies and legwarmers for protection.
Kickin' it old school Hollywood-Sabrina, Roman Holiday, Casablanca, Ziegfeld Girls,Guys and Dolls, A Streetcar Named Desire, Breakfast at Tiffanies (for the eclectics), and anything else starring the lovely Audrey or Katherine Hepburn, and Mr. Bogart.
Everything and anything older than that-Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, The Tudors, and everything else involving corsets, kings, husband/wife hunting, and extremely proper English.
Choose food that matches appropriately.  And dainty napkins.  Just because they make everything better.  As do puppies.  But don't mix puppies and movies.  Or is it don't put puppies in the movie player....? Whatever.

Hope this helps kick those melancholy college feelings, and have a lovely day. :D

First Mark on the Slate

While discussing boy problems and the effectiveness of Ben & Jerry as an antidepressant, two best friends decided that their boredom should take on a new level by blogging their escapades, shenanigans, and brilliant thought processes.  We actually have know idea why anyone would want to read this, but we figured it was worth a try.  We did grow up in a rather bizarre environment where we were surrounded by tourists, flamboyantly gay people, and, once a year, thousands of body-painted/costumed/pretty-much-naked people for fest de la fantasy.  Key West is a crazy place to visit, and even crazier to live in, so here are the escapades of Iris and Samantha, two babes in the woods.  Or isle, we guess.
